I’m a bit confused on what exactly OpenVPN is. Is OpenVPN turning my Synology NAS into VPN? or is it connecting to an VPN?
I’m hoping to download some P2P content directly to my NAS instead of downloading to a computer and then uploading. I wanted to make sure my NAS is connected to VPN so that I don’t get flagged by my ISP and I’m not sure if OpenVPN does what I need it to or if I need to connect my NAS to NordVPN?
My network interface shows I’m connected to LAN 1, 2, and NordVPN (I followed the instructions online).
Check out this guide. It will get you setup with docker containers using container manager using the wireguard VPN protocol in a way that consumes almost no CPU whatsoever, as well as getting setup with a torrent client to transfer using p2p networks. By comparison, if you use OpenVPN you’ll nearly max out your CPU when transferring 20MB/s or so.
However, NotdVPN (a vpn provider, not a protocol/technology) doesn’t allow for port forwarding, so it’s not well suited for the task. You can still use it, but it’s more of a pain.
OpenVPN turning your NAS into a VPN server. It means wherever you are in the world, you can connect to your home network in a very secure way. It is important if you use untrusted wifi networks, like coffee shops, airport, workplace or school. It means, if you use torrent in any way, your ISP will be able to detect it the same way regardless you are doing it from home or from other places. If you want to hide that activity, you need to connect your NAS, or even better, your router to some OTHER VPN server, like NordVPN.
OpenVPN turns your Synology into a VPN server, allowing your client machine to securely connect and access your Synology remotely.
It’s not like a public VPN service (such as NORD) that connects you to an external server. Instead, this setup creates a private, secure connection directly to your own network.
If you have Nord, then you need to find a way to connect your Router to Nord so ALL your traffic goes through nord.
I run OpenVPN on my router (OPNsense). That way I get a remote vpn connection to anything on my lan.
OpenVPN is a type of protocol. NordVPN is a company/service. You can use OpenVPN to connect to that company’s (or another’s) servers and download your P2P content.
You can also use OpenVPN to turn your NAS into a VPN server but that is in the opposite direction to what you are proposing. As the name implies, servers ‘serve’ content.
‘pain’ is spot on. Obtaining the necessary key for the connection profile is a stumbling point because they don’t supply it in the admin screens any more. Dr Frank (at least when I found his guides) seemed very fond of Mulvad
Now he’s an AirVPN guy. It was very easy with them, port forwarding and all.
Thanks for the update! I’ll be looking for options when my Nord subscription wanes…
Nice. I switched from Nord to AirVPN after using Nord for 5 years or so. Was pleasantly surprised that they charged around 25% of Nord’s rate. Not nearly as many servers to choose from, but doesn’t affect speed or availability in my experience compared to Nord. Using it on my computers and devices now too.
