NordVPN Linux app goes open source

NordVPN has recently announced they are making their Linux app open source [https://nordvpn.com/blog/next-chapter-of-nordvpn/]. A networking library Libtelio used in all the NordVPN apps and a library used to share files using Meshnet also go open source.

From their blog post:

“It wouldn’t be possible to achieve anything even close to that without one very special community — people who write open-source code. Like many software companies, we rely on tools written by people who make them available to all for free. Now, NordVPN is committing to be part of this community and share code, which we believe provides both benefits to those that will use it as well as transparency to those that seek it.”

In case some of you don’t fully understand what it means, when the application goes open source, everyone can access its code and experiment with it as long as you know how to code (hint, the Chat GPT may come in handy here.)

This all sounds like a step forward for Nord apps and fingers crossed going open source will improve the overall quality of NordVPN service. Maybe someone in our community already checked the code [https://github.com/NordSecurity/nordvpn-linux])? Overall, what are your thoughts about this news? Do you find it useful or maybe you don’t care about it?

It’s a smart move imo, there will be people making forks and PRs so it’ll be compatible with more distros, without the nord team having to spend their time having to fix it for a minority of customers they can’t justify the time for

I hope this doesn’t mean that it’s now abandon-ware.
