ZenMate has always worked for me.
Both of those extensions recently stopped working for me as well. I had to manually update both through the extension menu in Chrome. On my PC I also had to uninstall the Hola program and reinstall the newest version before it would work properly.
After updating both extensions are working great. So I’d suggest trying to update them manually or uninstall/reinstall both extensions or the Hola program if you’re using that.
Hola injects ads nowadays afaik. Better to just use a paid vpn.

Hola does not inject any ads. We make our money from the premium service. There was an article that claimed we inject ads but did so without checking, and if you revert back you’ll see they made the correction (see the ‘update’ section on the bottom of http://discuss.howtogeek.com/t/warning-your-browser-extensions-are-spying-on-you/12394)
