Malwarebytes...another program to turn into complete monetized garbage

Why does all the great old programs die this inevitable death? Monetized to beat hell…selected just the free easy program to give me system a quick scan…but oh no…installed some web browser scanner that I literally optioned out of, running some program in my task manager that I am not authorized to close. Never again!!

I just keep it off and only use it once a month or so. Defender works most of the time. Malwarebytes dev already said they are never gonna change this approach of spamming users with pop ups, offers etc.

Sigh. We may not be Malwarebytes, but I can promise you we won’t suffer that fate as long as I’m around.

We need to make money to live and update, granted, but we won’t disrespect our users by doing so.

My guess is they sold themselves or gave away equity, which led to financial objectives and predatory monetization.

It’s staggering how easy it would be. I had a company doing a shady VPN continuously contacting me to embed their thing in OCCT for a substantial amount. That was wild. Of course I said no, and even added some not nice comments to the mix regarding their shady business and practices. Yet they were probably a hundred times bigger than us, 1 programmer at that time. Probably seen as an easy prey. The amount of money was staggering.

CPU-Z, Hwinfo, Zentimings, we’re a small group of programmers who love their user base first and foremost.

Only reason I have it installed still is because I have a grandfathered lifetime license from a boxed disc copy and I lost the disk and key in a house fire. It has only ever caught false positives on files, but the browser plugin has caught a few redirects on websites to sus addresses that uBlock Origin doesn’t block.

The line must ALWAYS go up…

  • AVG
  • Avast
  • Norton
  • SpybotSD
  • Malwarebytes

The list goes on…

another one bytes the dust.

To offer another opinion from all the other commenters, I still use malwarebytes and it’s fine. The browserguard is useful, especially for dodgy streaming sites for watching live sport.

I like having the extra security of defender and malwarebytes, because malware is a lot less effort to prevent than it is to get rid of. I don’t get pop ups, it doesn’t slow my pc down.

Private equity and VC ruin literally everything.

VLC is still hanging in there.

I just used windows defender now. Supposedly just as good as these other software options.

I have a related question:

most of the comments here are saying defender+web protection/common sense is fine, which is what i use, but has virus technology not advanced? are people not coming up with new viruses like everyday? or is Microsoft just that good at updating defender?

I legit have not used a third party AV in years.

Nowadays Defender is all you need.

because at some point they sell out and tell no one and the new overloards now have a huge market saturation to make changes to

Windows defender has been the only think you need for years (and really if you know what you are doing you don’t really need one at all… but most people don’t know what they are doing)

I only run adw cleaner once in a while

Just use Windows Defender. Any other free antivirus is just a scam. You could even call it a virus.

I bought a lifetime key years ago and never looked back

I have literally never had a problem with Malwarebytes when run my windows machine. I also have not been following them since I bought the software years and years ago on the lifetime license. What’s going on with them?

Simple. How many here bought it?
