Looking for help regarding Global VPN to a Tz300 - Windows 7 vs 10 machine

Hello All,

Kind of a novice when it comes to networking and spent more hours than I am willing to admit and I’m hoping that someone out there can figure out where I’m going wrong

What I had:

5 year old laptop MSI ge62 dual boot, with windows 7 ultimate and windows 10 home version 20H2

Software: Global VPN 4.10.2.0428 (setup was all default)

The VPN Machine: Sonicwall Tz300

Issues: None. I could connect from outside the network using global VPN, ping other computers inside the sonicwall and connect to computer terminals inside the sonicwall using TightVNC.

What I have now:

2021 MSI GP76 laptop running windows 10 pro version 21H2.

Software: Same Global VPN 4.10.2.0428 (setup was all default)

The VPN Machine: Same Sonicwall Tz300 (no settings changed)

Issues: I can connect to the Tz300 using the same global VPN software but I can’t ping computers nor connect to them using tightVNC.

I feel that it’s a windows 10 pro version 21H2 issue as I can do everything I want to do on the dual boot machine with the same settings.

Have any of you ever run into this problem?

Additional info:

Im using both laptops from my home network which is Private(windows 10) and home(windows 7)

Both machines connected using ethernet cable.

Home IP address is different than the one inside the sonicwall.

Once inside the sonicwall, windows 10 machine can’t ping orconnect to other PC’s using tightVNC.

Started using a windows 10 Home machine build 20H2 and I’m able to connect. No issues. So now that means the the windows 10 build 21H2 is an issue.

Still investigating.

Final Solution that worked for me

  1. Setup an SSL-VPN service on my sonicwall using the following video
Note: the only parts I used from this video was from 3:25 - 6:41

  2. Download SonicWALL Mobile Connect from the microsoft store

  3. Go to Settings>Network & Internet and look on the left column for VPN

  4. Select VPN and on the next page towards the top, select “Add a VPN connection”

  5. On the next page select the following:
    VPN Provider: Sonicwall Mobile Connect
    Connection Name: Anything you want
    Server Name or address: https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:4433

Then hit save.

I next clicked on the vpn server that I created, selected “connect” and it started talking to the sonicwall. It asked me for my login and I was in. Able to ping all computers and my functionality was back.

If I did something wrong, please don’t hesitate to point it out as I won’t learn anything otherwise.

It’s weird that I couldn’ve get the Global VPN to work like with the other computer.

Thanks for those that posted a response, you are the real MVP’s.

Public vs private network?

Open Settings.

Click on the Network and Internet icon.

As you are using a wired connection, click on Ethernet.

Click on the connection name on the right. In my case, it is named just “Network”.

Turn on the desired option

I think you just need to make the VPN connection PRIVATE.
Give it a try.

Private network when using both windows 7 and windows 10.

Both machines connected using ethernet cable.

Home IP address is different than the one inside the sonicwall.

Thank you for your reply. I followed your steps and it turns out that selection is already marked as a private network.

I have a fix that worked and I’ll post in the original post. I hope it’s an acceptable solution but like I said, I’m a novice when it comes to networking.
