Looking for an effective vpn

hi everyone, I am looking for an effective and secure vpn, which one do you recommend and why?
I am traveling to Europe if it makes a difference, thank you in advance!

I’ve used NordVPN for ages and I’ve got no complaints. (UK-based but travel to Asia and Africa frequently)

I can’t offer any comparisons (I’ve only used one the past decade [PIA] and have no complaints) but I will say:

When you decide on one, find a deal. They all have good deals. Never pay the sticker price.

Have a good vacation

I’m a flight attendant and I’m all over Europe. I’ve never had a problem with Express VPN

proton vpn is good, try it out

I don’t use it anymore but Avast Secure Line was top notch.
Now I rarely need a VPN and just use the (free) Proton Mail one (you do need an account though)

I’m currently in Europe and NordVPN is working fine for me.

I just used Mullvad for 2 weeks in Portugal. Worked well and the app is easy to use.

Nord works, I had Norton cause it’s what’s pumped out there for internet security and stuff but streaming services like paramount weren’t letting me watch anything. Switched to nord this year and it has given me no problems.

Sign up to proton mail and use their VPN - it’s the most secure email and vpn

NordVPN is the best imo. I’ve tried so many, but Nord is most reliable, especially if you’re getting the paid version.
Plus their customer service is one of the best ever - they help with everything, stay with you till whatever problem gets fully resolved, answer your questions - and not like the way most customer service people do where they copy paste the help articles… like these are real people helping out and explaining things
Honestly, there are a lot of good VPNs out there and a lot of them are pretty comparable, but Nord’s customer service just sets them wayyy apart

I use Express VPN and I like it when it works, but I have so much trouble on airplanes, does anyone else suffer from this with other VPN’s? Sometimes it works great, on other airplanes it doesn’t connect (even within the same airline, just a different plane). Sometimes if I futz around with the protocols I can get it to work, but then the next time, that protocol won’t work…

I use NordVPN but am not sure if I would recommend it. While it appears at the top of a lot of “best” lists, it can be slow at times to the point where I have disabled it (after toggling it off/on didn’t work). I wonder how other services are speed wise.

VPNs are overrated and their ads are used as fear mongering. 99.9% of web browsing and email is already encrypted end to end anyway using TLS, SSL, etc. Twenty years ago I would advocate using a VPN, but for general web access these days it is overkill and an unnecessary expense.

Keep in mind that when using a VPN your data is only encrypted between you and the VPN provider. It rides the rest of the trip between the provider and the server you are connecting to using it’s native encryption method (TLS, SSL, etc). Also, the provider could easily record all of the sites you visit (but not the data) if they so choose to.

The best firewall is the one between your ears. Know about fake sites, phishing emails, etc. Never accept certificates from unknown sites or issuers. Basic things like that.

I have been using NordVPN in the US and Asia and I have not found any speed loss or connection issues.

They all will generally do what you want, but features to look for are their privacy policies. For best privacy, choose one that sits in a country that has strong privacy laws and doesn’t keep logs.

I’ve used my nordvpn everywhere I’ve traveled.

ProtonMail’s VPN is probably in the top 5 for ethics and an awesome company. Think about using a different account from your Proton email address.

Over the past few years, there has been tremendous consolidation in the VPN industry. Many of the names you know are really the same company. It really doesn’t matter which you use. PIA, Nord, etc.

Think about implementing your own VPN using Algo, or Streisand. Algo is by Dan Guido of the Trail of Bits company. You run scripts he/they wrote to us Ansible to deploy and configure the VPN on one of the public cloud providers. The advantage to this is you, and you alone, use that IP address. It’s really not that hard.

Consider using a hardware device like the Tiny Hardware Firewall. These are completely separate devices where you connect that device to a public WiFi network, then it broadcasts a WiFi signal that you, and/or a travel companion, then use. The advantage to this is that your device never touches the public WiFi network. The device acts as a firewall/router/WiFi.

To piggyback on this, in addition to not paying sticker price, many VPNs offer cash back through sites like Rakuten. A terrific aggregator of different cash back sites worth bookmarking is https://www.cashbackmonitor.com/

I’d say do your research and pick a service, then see what cash back might be available - rather than starting with which services offer cash back.

I have the Proton suite and NordVPN and like Nord better, but YMMV.

how did you get their service, thru app or site?
