I noticed that several times when I log in to my computer (Apple M1) ProtonVPN is not connected and is still able to access the internet. I checked the IP in this case and it was my true IP. The whole time kill switch has been enabled. Only after connecting to a server within ProtonVPN was my true IP was no longer revealed.
Isn’t the kill switch supposed to prevent accessing the internet unless connected through the VPN? Why I am able to access the internet when there is no VPN connection?
To clarify, Kill Switch is a feature that cuts off your Internet connection in case of unexpected VPN disconnection (Application crash or other errors during your active session). If you disconnect manually or do not connect at all, Kill Switch will not be triggered therefore your connection will be active and you can still browse the Internet. Any luck with this? I"m having the same problem. If my laptop goes to sleep it disconnects IPVanish, then when it comes back on I’m unprotected. Major problem.
Same problem here one year later
Oh OK, so it appears to be a partial kill switch then. I am coming from Mullvad where their kill switch kills all internet activity when the VPN is not active, and it is not restricted to only disconnections. This is why I was confused when ProtonVPN’s kill switch wasn’t working as I was expecting it to.
Do you have plans to expand the kill switch capability to ensure ALL internet activity is blocked when not connected to the VPN?
We appreciate your suggestion regarding the permanent KillSwitch feature for the macOS ProtonVPN application. We’ll forward your feature request to our development team for internal consideration.
This is kind of mandatory otherwise protonvpn is useless on macos
