Kaspersky beginning transition of U.S. users to UltraAV

Due to recent ban against the sale of Kaspersky software in the United States, users are now being transitioned to UltraAV. I’m not sure how I feel about this. I liked Kaspersky.

Looking at the feature set this “new” “UltraAV” Looks just like Kaspersky but with a different name

Same. Don’t know anything about this AV or if it is a safe to use product.

I had to google UltraAV and one of the topic links I got was this - https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/24256/UltraAV.exe/

I found it a bit ironic.

Right now I only find UltraAV via UltraVPN that feels a bit sketchy even if it’s legit.

EDIT: Might be this - https://ultrasecureav.com/

Id like to know more about this. I would love if it was just Kaspersky with a different name.

It’s apparently owned by Pango. Source (paywalled)

PC Mag cited this thread in their article about it.

https://www.pcmag.com/news/use-kaspersky-antivirus-software-youll-be-migrated-to-pangos-ultraav

On their website, UltraAV claims to have been around since 2019.

But other than news about UltraAV acquiring the Kaspersky US user base, there’s little published about them online. In terms of test results of their antivirus software from any of the major test labs, AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, Virus Bulletin, there’s nothing.

The streets prefer Bitdefender nowadays

For posterity, I’ll post what I’ve read on UltraAV here.

It’s the antivirus product from UltraVPN, which is by Pango, which also owns Hotspot Shield. In 2021 Pango was bought by another cybersecurity company known as Aura. They then split back into separate companies in the week before the UltraAV-Kaspersky announcement went public.

The internet seems to have no record of the existence of UltraAV prior to this week.

However, their former parent company, Aura, includes an antivirus as part of their identity and privacy protection suite. PC Mag believed Aura originally used a licensed version of Avira, though the company wouldn’t confirm it, before developing their own antivirus engine.

There is no record of either UltraAV or Aura av being tested by any of the reputable labs like AV-Comparatives, AV-Test, or others.

It’s possible UltraAV may be a rebadged version of the Aura av. If it’s a different av engine licensed from another company, I doubt they’ll acknowledge that publicly.

Well, seems like a shitty Antivirus. They must’ve obtained a large sum of money to accept this deal.

Kaspersky is still goated. They’re not just banned because they are Kremlin linked, but they actually REALLY pissed off the US government when they exposed one of the most sophisticated threat actors in the world, the Equation Group, as being tied directly to the NSA.

They’re an authentic product and the Kremlin is not interested in your data. It’s a waste of space on their servers, even if they did want to collect it.

Ultra AV huh… It’s probably just like one of those Chinese restaurants where they re-open a year later with a different name after failing an inspection.

I don’t know why I never get these emails, my account has my email address and it’s listed as a USA account. I’m curious how they’re gonna filter these, by that country tag in the account or by IP or both. I won’t be using some unknown product by a company “buying up VPNs”.

That sounds like the name of a Fake AV from the early 2010’s

Was anyone brave enough to give UltraAV a go?

Same, I came here looking for more info re: UltraAV. I was pretty content with Kaspersky but I don’t know anything about this new AV.

Darn, this Ultra AV has no free version.

Never heard of Ultra AV.

I just found this software on my computer and was scratching my head, since I don’t recall downloading it. I’ve been using Kaspersky for over 20 years, so I’m not happy with the decision the Fed Govt made. It’s good to see that came from them, but I know nothing about the company or if it’s on par with Kaspersky. I really don’t care to go to Norton.

Definitely don’t download that, lol.
