Is Opera/OperaGX that bad?

Title basically. Everytime someone asks for recommendations for a browser, i see a lot of suggestions but i have never seen anyone suggesting trying to use Opera.

I am just curious about it, because IIRC Opera was quite popular some time ago and now i do not know why absolutely no one doesn’t even mention them as a possibility when offering browser recommendations?

It’s not the browser per se, it’s the fact that since 2015 Opera has been in a chinese conglomerate’s ownership which raises privacy concerns. The parent company was also involved in some shady loan business which they reportedly advertised in Opera back in the day. I find Opera to be a very fast and capable browser, I like the workspaces function, but for the mentioned reasons I do not use it much.

Edit: spelling

It’s just another chrome clone, but it’s owned by a Chinese company so there’s an extra spooky factor (Google Chrome is probably spookier if you’re not a Chinese citizen though). I actually have it installed and it’s nothing special, no reason I can see to use it over Brave, Vivaldi, Edge, etc, but it’s not like it’s bad or anything.

Opera GX on the other hand is just hilarious, I installed it awhile ago and couldn’t stop laughing about how it has atmospheric gaming music playing in the background and makes laser beam noises when you click on stuff. Opera GX is worth installing once just to see what all the YouTubers they pay to advertise for them are experiencing.

I really like opera with all of their features. I just abandoned it because of 1 reason i.e It doesn’t sync your extensions

I like Opera, been using it since ver 7 as my main browser. It has a good ad blocker and tracker blocker. I have no problems with it.

Opera was one of the best browsers that ever existed

imposters soiling the name are just as useless as any other chromium clone

I landed here looking into opera, and I’ll tell you this: if it wasn’t for the fact that it overrode my icue settings and kicked my headset off of my PC, I wouldn’t have looked for this.
Just the few facts alone that there is speculation, I wouldn’t.
There is ABSOLUTELY ZERO NEED to integrate with my RGB. It’s a browser. Simple, done!
If you simps want to be so complacent, great! That’s your choice!
But you should be honest so people, so those who don’t want to tolerate this garbage don’t have to.
There is zero excuse for this. Zero.
Too many programs trying to integrate with shit they don’t need to.
What else did they put their fingers into on my PC? Should I uninstall everything and reinstall from scratch now?
I should not have this stress over A BROWSER
Stop using lies to stick up for ANYONE

I’d rather use vivaldi since im switching to that browser

I used to use Opera for a long time 2004-2012 and a bit here and there. But they kind of ruined the UI with a lot of clutter and useless features. Reliability has always been a bit of an issue. And since they got bought out, I have zero faith in them.

OperaGX is just bloatware, it contains a bunch of features that a browser really doesn’t need. Mostly useless junk. The only good feature is the themes, being able to fully customize your browser is neato. Otherwise, just use Chrome, Firefox or Edge. Save yo sanity.

Update / Edit: Apparently Opera also has A LOT of controversies right now.

its like Americans hate on China ahh thingy

In my testing Opera has issues other browsers don’t and it’s slower as well, so I don’t see the reson to use it.

The only reason I don’t use it feels like it would be called petty or something with the same impact. I want the favorites bar to only show up in new tabs automatically. I do not want to have to ctrl + b each time I want to see it.

I just started using opera today because i wanted to see what all the hype was about and I kinda feel like it was overhyped. I do enjoy the background music update they added and the cool backgrounds but thats just about it. Don’t get me wrong the other features are cool but I wouldn’t say they are a necessity. Sometimes i also feel on edge just using the app because of i heard their privacy wasn’t so good. Ima probably use the app for 2-3 more days but if I still see it as useless ima probably delete it.

I used Opera for about 6 months, and the whole thing is a headache. Every time it updates, which is extremely often, it basically locks out your entire browser, and in order to get it functional again, you have to clear your cache, cookies, etc. Then make sure your VPN is turned off. Then, just go through this entire list of tasks to try and get it to work.

I really wanted to like Opera, but after the 7th time of having to resign into every single thing because it was refusing to load pages for one reason or another, I have had enough. I’m going back to Edge or Chrome. That and it loads extremely slowly anyway. It’s like YouTube/Google especially isn’t compatible with that browser.
