Is it ok for a VPN app to ask for a user's Apple ID?

Hi people,

The title says it all really. I am not an iOS user, so am a little confused if a user should be worried if a VPN asks for their Apple ID during installation.

Edit: The VPN provider has contacted me to confirm this is simply iOS checking credentials when installing a new app or accepting payment. Thanks for all the replies.

I don’t know much about VPN’s, but if the app itself is asking for your Apple ID I would not trust it. If it is just the iPhone asking for the ID/password to verify the admin wants the install to occur on the phone, you’re most likely okay

Not no but hell no. The only reason they’d want your Apple ID is to spy on you. They already have your info when you paid for it unless you used bitcoins. I’d not want that for either verification nor opening my access to a third party.

You have no guarantee what ever that this VPN company will safe guard your data. It’s totally out of your hands once you give up that info.

To see what sort of headaches that can cause, all you got to do is look at the equifax mess. There the people in the database didn’t asked to be put in it. Yet their data was gathered, assembled into a database that was hacked and then the results of that hack was sold to who ever would pay the price.

One lady has had 15 times false applications have been made for credit cards in her name she didn’t make.

No one but no one will guard your data as well as you will. Once it is gone from your hands, you can’t just pull it back.

Come on guys, it’s not a VPN provider is asking your Apple ID, it’s iOS is asking for your credentials if you have administrative rights to install a new app (purchase app) because usually your Apple ID is connected with CC so you need to enter your fingerprints/password.
Douglas_Crawford you are making a storm in a glass of water.

Hello to the No! Never ever ever will they need your  id. 99.9% of Free VPNs are not good .

That sounds extremely fishy.

Yeah… but a VPN provider can spy on everything you do anyway - its the way the tech works…

That is what I wanted to know (and why I asked). Thanks (and to mynameisconroy who has said something similar).

Hmm. This is not a free VPN. It is high profile paid-for service that is often recommended on grounds of privacy.

PM me the name of it if you want , I have tried at least 20 different VPNs and actually spend the time reading the boring terms and conditions and can double check for you .
