Good to know! I haven’t used Tver in a few years, so wasn’t aware of this.
I don’t watch much anime but I had a look just now to check what you said and found 日本語CC as an option at least for the first 5 I looked at. Or do you mean English subs?
NHK isn’t a “streaming service” like Hulu or Netflix or Amazon Prime though.
To be fair, I turned my TV on once to watch a World Cup game but that was it for this month as there’s very little of interest to me. A TV set with NHK on at the Japanese in-laws sounds about right though.
The thread is filled with a lot of misinformation. Domestic subtitles on TV are quite good.
Yeah I spoke too soon Lol.
Yeah dubbed shows are very hit or miss, and the subs are usually not exact
Oh wow I just went to check and you’re right, I tried a few anime from this new season and a few from a few seasons back and they all have 日本語CC. I stand corrected. I can guarantee you last time I used Prime Video (like 1 or 2 years ago) almost no anime had subtitles, especially the ones that were simulcast. It must be a new addition. I’m glad to hear they finally evolved to the same level of Netflix (although they still look like ass compared to the ones on Netflix).
Right, you mentioned
old people and number of TVs on in public places with the sound off.
(which most of them have subs)
It sounded like you were heavily implying that subtitles are not normal in Japan including national TV.
On streaming services I agree most of them (with the exception of Netflix) are pretty bad with subtitles and it’s a real shame.
