No absolutely not. I recently purchased the paid Internet Security 10 License Product. I got sick of Windows defender not staying in its Lane and deleting files that it should not have had access to due to exceptions. Defender would also turn itself back on even if I had it disabled. After losing quite a bit of work utilizing penetration testing tools and having defender destroy my entire project while I was at lunch and refuse to restore the files, that was the last straw.
I had a support session with AVG because the products continually advertised to me for their VPN and other BS products that I do not want and during the course of that chat I found the AVG emergency updater log. I was on the chat with them when I found that that program tracks to Google-analytics.com several times a day. Google analytics emphasizes that companies must have the consumers Express consent to sell data to them but AVG is doing it despite being opted out of every privacy setting in both the program and their website. For my settings nothing should be shared not even logs or usage information. AVG had no explanation for that. The only reason I’m allowing those programs to still run is to collect evidence on what they are sending Google analytics. The contacts page for Google analytics is pretty well defended by a form and chatbot and kept getting redirected back to the Community support, so I figured that was a great place to post screenshots of them selling my data and my privacy settings expressly saying that I do not consent to it. That company is F’ed.

Defender is reliable and far preferable to AVG. If there’s ever anything that you think Defener isn’t hanlling, do a (free) malwarebytes scan.
Probably a false positive. AVG is known for them.

When I google for “mallard virus” all I see is articles about birds, so I don’t know anything about what you are asking.

Just dont visit shady websites and dont download random stuff. Check if the stuff you are trying to download is legit before getting it

Just turn it on and have it do the rest. No need to really do that much. Just use common sense with what you view and download online and you will be fine
