Imap server connection through VPN

Ever since the forced password reset caused by the Comcast data breach they are now blocking access to imap.comcast.net when the customer is attached using a VPN:

VPN disconnected. open outlook. click send/receive. everything is fine. Work for many hours. close outlook.

Immediately connect to VPN. open outlook. click send/receive. IMMEDIATE popup asking for credentials. Error: Outlook cannot download folder inbox from the IMAP email server for account @comcast.net. Error: Cannot connect to the server.

Kill outlook using sysinternals process explorer. Disconnect from VPN. open outlook. click send/receive. everything is fine.

I am past asking why Comcast is doing this. Now I ask: Is it the official policy of Comcast that they do not support imap email via VPN? Because if it is I can begin the migration away.

Thanks

Hello u/ewtaylo, thanks for reaching out. We are sorry to hear that you are having trouble accessing your email when connected to your VPN.

When using a VPN it can definitely be a bit hard to narrow down what the exact issue could be. Because the emails work fine outside of the VPN, this tells me that everything on our side is functioning normally, but there is some type of conflict with the VPN and the email server. To better answer your question, there is no policy that would not allow a customer to use a VPN with their comcast.net email.

LOL at: this tells me that everything on our side is functioning normally

Comcast servers are not allowing connections from VPN end points. That is a configuration that Comcast and only Comcast controls.

u/ewtaylo, I can run some remote troubleshooting steps on my end to see if we can get to the bottom of this. In order to get started can you please send me a Modmail message with your full name, and full address?

All that has been done before. It has been going on for months.

I am in the middle of moving my emails over to google in anticipation of cancelling my Comcast service.

Thanks

u/ewtaylo, we certainly don’t want to see you leave the Xfinity community, and I’d love a chance to work with you more on this. I totally get the trepidation since you’ve been dealing with this for a while now, but I can review past tickets or steps and work from there.
