I have an iPad 2 and appletv 2 (not jail broken).
I can do that with my iPhone and my ATV. I use Tunnelbear VPN and my AppleTV isn’t jail broken (I don’t even know what jail breaking an ATV would do). I used it yesterday to watch Netflix Netherlands and Netflix Sweden.
I don’t think a VPN can cause any trouble for AirPlay. However, if you’re not comfy with AirPlaying stuff to your AppleTV, you can also setup SmartDNS on your Apple TV or VPN on your router. I use PureVPN and there are detailed tutorials on how to set up both. It will free up your iPad 2 and you wouldn’t have to use 2 devices to watch your fav stuff.
I vpn with privateinternetaccess and airplay to appletv simultaneously quite often.
assuming the Apple TV is on the local network it shouldn’t be an issue.
If your VPN allows split tunneling than it shouldn’t mind the multicast traffic of airplay.
If you have to use a key fob to use your VPN, chances are your out of luck.
If you use a normal password then your probably going to be fine.
Thanks. I’m not sure if jail breaking would make a difference either just thought I’d throw that in there in case it did.
Basically a jb for atv gives you xbmc
Same here - TB gives me iPlayer (even though I pay the license fee, I can’t get it out of the country without TB…for now) and I mirror it to the Apple TV. Works a treat.
Isn’t Netflix region locked to an account? I tried proxy to the U.S. But got the Dutch Netflix (local) anyway
What I’m planning to watch is through safari or chrome so I will still need to use my iPad, there are no apps for Big Brother
Call me crazy but I’m happy with my netflix canada content and I’m afraid putting the vpn directly on my router will prevent me from watching content on Canadian tv apps (global, ctv, discovery, city, ect).
Good to know, thanks. PIA is one of the vpns I’m considering (the other is HMA).
Can you tell me how to do this? I’ve got PIA on my iPad, and when I try to airplay to my apple tv, it only plays the sound.
Nope - I have a Canadian account and watch Netflix in 3 or 4 different regions when I want to (Netherlands and UK are most common, US and Sweden sometimes too). Tunnelbear is missing South and Central American regions at this point, but Brazil is supposed to be happening soon.
I chose TB because it has a very easy user interface, a very reasonable price, and it’s Canadian
I won’t prevent you from watching, but it will make it harder to switch back and forth - that’s one of the nice things about a VPN.
We use HMA at work (for testing things like availability to our website to users in hong kong) and I use PIA at home. Personally I really like PIA. It’s really fast.
