I’m from Czech Republic and just few minutes ago, I found out Hulu is blocked. Then I’ve read that with help of VPN, I can bypass the geographic block.
Here are my questions:
-
Is it legal?
-
Is it safe?
-
Will it influence my online activities much? I have many accounts and I’m frequent password forgetter, for starters. What would it change?
-
Is it cheap?
-
Is it quick?
-
How is it done?
I also want to share it with my friend.
It’s a gray area. Not necessarily legal but no one is going to kick your door in and arrest you.
Yes. Just get a trustworthy VPN
You should get a password manager. Look into Keepass or Bitwarden
Most are decently cheap about less than 12 USD a month, but it’s cheaper if you buy the yearly subscription, 2 year or 3 year plans. Most have discounts for the long run plans instead of doing the monthly plan.
You really only download the VPN client from the provider, set the location to US, connect and you’re good to go usually. If it doesn’t work, you may need to switch servers. Sometimes a specific VPN server might get blocked by Hulu/Netflix, so it’s always a cat and mouse game with VPN providers and streaming services
- Legality I wouldn’t worry too much about because there aren’t laws specific to VPNs right now.
- Even if you don’t need a VPN to bypass a geo-block, it is always a great option because it improves your online security.
- It wouldn’t change your online activities. For anything that is only available within the Czech Republic, you’ll just have to change your location to a CZ server. For the password issue, I recommend getting Bitwarden to save your passwords.
- Depends on the VPN you use. Do your research to find the best one for your specific needs but be careful because some haven’t been independently vetted which means they might be keeping logs. The top three providers are Express VPN, Nord, and Surfshark. They all have different packages but generally, Surfshark is the cheapest of the three and ExpressVPN is the most expensive.
- All three of the top providers do well on speed and in the latest test, Surfshark was mentioned to have beaten the other two. It all depends on the server you connect to as well. but generally, all three are good for streaming.
- Depends on the provider you go with. You might have to clear your browser’s cache and cookies, connect to a US-based server, and then log in to your account.
You’ll be able to share the account with your friend without a problem because Hulu allows for multiple user profiles. Before you take the plunge though, know that since Hulu is not available outside of the US, for the payment details you might have issues if your putting down a billing address outside the US.
1: yes
2:yes
3: nothing but you should never use a pw twice. Just download bittwarden and you have all pw in one app
4: depends you can get 1-2 years to for 50-70 €
5: don’t know what you want to say
6: download a vpn and just aktivate it to a country
where hulu is accessible
Would a VPN help you?
Hulu may base access on the geographic origin of your payment method.
- Probably against the providers T&Cs so they can deny service but it isn’t unlawful.
- For the purposes of streaming - Yes
- Shouldn’t do and you can turn the VPN on/off so only use it for streaming
- Prices vary but make sure to get one that other users have said will work with your desired streaming service.
- Depends on the service provider. Most seem to fast enough for streaming but I’m sure there are some that aren’t as good
- Subscribe to a VPN provider, either download an app that sets things up for you or follow the relatively simple instructions (becomes more complex if you set up a VPN on a router).
Your VPN provider may limit the number of devices, the number of simultaneous connections or both; so whilst you probably can share with a friend just make sure that you can both connect at the same time.
The streaming company may detect that you are using a VPN and stop serving you content so get a VPN subscription that you trial before you buy and that you aren’t tied into if it suddently stops working.
Regarding number 5, I meant if it’s quick to set it up.
