I currently have HideMyAss but I'm dumping them. What is a good replacement VPN provider? [x-post r/torrents]

I mostly use it for torrenting. I use uTorrent. I’d like to be able to bind the IP address and had a horrible time with HMA’s IP Bind feature. Suggestions anyone? Thanx!

UPDATE: So I decided to give Private Internet Access a try. It did not work so well with Windows but their OpenVPN option works fine. Their tech support helped me through it and the download rate is MUCH better than what I had with HMA!.

Thanks all for your input and advice! <3 Reddit!

I have Private Internet Access. They are at the top of most lists for best VPN, they keep no logs and have no qualms about torrenting.

I seem to recall something about Hidemyass retaining a fair amount of data on users traffic, being served with court order to release the information and complying.

I use Astrill. Awesome selection of servers, plenty of P2P ones around the world. Great speeds. and they will give you a 1 week trial.

If you decide on them, please let me send you an invite, gets me a free month on my subscription. If not, all good as well.

I’m using https://cloudnymous.com for 3 months already. They are the first VPN service provider with pay-per-use pricing model. The speed is quite good and they explicitly mentioned that they keep no logs.

If you’re in Europe, Mullvad!

EDIT: What happened? Why are we all being downvoted for praising Mullvad?

I’m using TowerVPN. It’s cheap, has mutlple locations and is fast, allowing torrenting.

I like the deals, $35 for 6 months or $40 for a year. I think I might pay the extra $5.

Where in the US do they have servers? I went with HMA because of the availability of a couple mid-west servers (Chicago, Cincy, and KC ass a few). Living in Indiana I don’t want to go through a VPN in NYC or Miami. I am considering moving because I can’t get HMA to cooperate with uT. I keep losing the connection and it is slower in general. Currently I fly naked because of it. TYIA

I just swapped to them, but I also just found a DNS leaks site. I’ve had leaks since about 4 hours after I signed up.

Any idea what I can do?

I also use PIA and am so far happy but have run into a few issues with their US based gateways.

All US gateways are blocking port 8000. The non-US are not, but I am sticking to US based gateways so services like Netflix still work.

I also noticed at least one piece of software that fetches metadata is running substantially slower when connected to the US based gateways.

Any advice?

Quite ironic considering their name.

being served with court order to release the information and complying

Holy shit, they complied? With the law?

Honestly, what do you expect a company to do when it’s ordered by the courts to do something? Take hostages?

(I am not defending HideMyAss in any way, I’ve never used their service. But your criticism of them seems like a ridiculous one. I suppose retaining data is not strictly necessary, so it’s a valid criticism, but complying with a court order?)

I believe it is the ability to have the torrent client send all its data through the VPN, while having all the rest go through the normal connection (which is usually faster)

Using Astrill here as well. Added the $5/month +5 IP plan and all my devices are VPN’d (Phone/tablet/laptop/router). Great service and great speeds. NonVPN speeds at home at 2.7MB/s, connected to a server (across the country too!) I get 2.5MB/s. Plenty of servers (77 if I remember) with a couple which offer P2P connections. They have an easy router (DD-WRT and Tomato) setup script as well.

I also have referral links if you wanna be awesome. =)

Good point. Does this mean that if I connect only 10 days in a month to a $0.15/day server I would only spend $1.5 in that month?

Wow! Some ppl here hate Mullvad.

Before you click the down arrow, can you please take a moment to explain the hate. Is there something others might like to know?

In the US. I’ve heard good things about Mullvad, tho!

I did the $40 for a year. I used a pre-piad, non-reloadable visa gift card to purchase it.

Here I hope this is the correct page. It’s blocked at work for Proxy Avoidance.
