I am attempting to load VPN on school wifi, I have gotten nothing to work

Howdy! I live in a high school (boarding) that has extremely restrictive filtering. Can’t play GTA, can’t play Minecraft, Valorant, nothing. They block everything non-essential to school, despite the fact that I live here and not everything I do should / will be directly influenced by schoolwork.

Regardless, I am trying to use mullvad and I can’t get it to work at all. It seems they have everything blocked, like everything. I have tried OpenVPN on ports 443/80, using bridge mode, using both ports on wireguard, ipv4/ipv6, absolutely nothing will work.

All OpenVPN servers running through the OpenVPN client have been blocked, ProtonVPN has been blocked, and I really don’t want to drop money on other VPNs just to see what will work.

Anyone have any idea on how I could bypass this?

Thanks!

Tried a config with TCP over port 443 ?

Can you SSH to port 22 anywhere? This might be a quicker solution for you. Or, with stunnel and port 443, this will look exactly like HTTPS traffic which I assume isn’t blocked by their DPI firewall.
As a complete sidenote, maybe you should focus on school instead. There is a reason why they do it. Yeah I know it’s a dad’s suggestion,
but you can always play GTA later, while you can’t get your school
days in the years ahead.

Yes, I am able to SSH to a server on port 22, but I am unaware of the implications of that. I can also check out stunnel, but I would like to see what being able to connect to port 22 actually does for me before giving it a go.

As for school, yes, you are correct. I should be focusing on school, and I shouldn’t be playing games during classes. However, I also spend most weekends here, and all my free time is spent on campus. I will be focusing on school and have the full intent to do so, but I still want to play games when I have free time.

Edit: Mods, why did you remove that comment lol. It was really helpful all the way around, unless he was providing explicitly bad information.

For those who may be looking for this after the fact, the link was https://mullvad.net/en/help/ssh-and-mullvad-vpn/

You convinced me that you are a good student
I edited my post above to include the SSH tunnel guide, this will give you the best performance in terms of reachability or access.
But keep in mind that if you play online games, your ping might be higher than normal so don’t expect it to be a “gamer setup”. I don’t play games so I’m not sure what difference it makes between 50ms
and 400ms ping times, but it should definitely work.

hmm okay so I am trying that, and while it works when I tether on my phone, it does not when I connect back to the wifi. It just goes in an infinite connection loop. Here is the full log: https://pastebin.com/raw/0H5J6Ya7

edit:

Alright I found out that I did part of it wrong (I didn’t select bridges when exporting the OpenVPN config). However, I get the same exact issue, this time with both cellular and school wifi.

No, you are doing it wrong. You need to either SSH(22) or stunnel(443) to the bridge servers. Do you need a detailed guide or you can follow the official reference?
Your end port is 1197, which is blocked on your end. You need to use either 22 or 443.

Just ate the removed comments? I’m curious lol
