I had the same exact problem, solved it by purchasing a shared SOCKS5 Netherlands proxy (probably you can use any other country, except for Russia of course) with authentication. The price was around 0.3$ for a month, you might find even cheaper. Works like as using shadowsocks and maybe even better.
Then after purchase you have to input proxy into your Multi-Hop, make sure to use SOCKS5 proxy.
Any HTTP/HTTPS proxies won’t work.
There is a proxy server from PIA, for it you only need to generate a login and password in your personal account. And unfortunately, there is no option for such a connection in the PIA mobile application. I tried through OpenVPN Connect, without success. Are there such solutions for Android?
Thanks for telling about proxy server from PIA, but I guess it might be blocked by a provider in any moment soon, so it’s better to get a socks5 proxy from some proxy service. Haven’t tried to connect on a phone, using regular vpn from store if needed.
You don’t have to buy your own server. Just enter in search: “Do you offer a SOCKS5 proxy”. This is a simple guide, but you need access to your personal PIA account.
You also need an access point that is not in Russia , cause trying to get IP while in Russia doesnt generate anything. Had to ask someone to do it for me out side Russia. So keep that in mind. But it works. For now
