How do I host Openvpn on my unused computers?

I’m trying to get internet in China and I have already verified that openvpn works. Currently I have it set up on my Asus router, but the firmware is not giving me a lot of control and handicaps speed. Is there a way that I can turn my unused laptops into a “host”?

Of course. Set up the OpenVPN server on one of your computers. I’d highly recommend using a Linux based OS like Ubuntu Server for 24/7 operation

Many options. Assume the computer has windowOS on it, you can go to softether official website, download and install the softether server for window on the PC and set up a OpenVPN server.

P.S. personally I would run the server on a Linux Disto OS… but you can set the VPN server up on a Window PC

Do you want to use your unused laptops for the OpenVPN client instead of your Asus router?

Firstly, can your Asus router (you did not state the model number) take OpenWrt? If you install OpenWrt on it, that will give you much more flexibility than using the horrible Asus firmware.

If your Asus router is not supported by OpenWrt, find a router that is and then try to do what you would like to do.

You can check here → [OpenWrt Wiki] Table of Hardware

You want to connect to a host based in the US from China? Why not use a service (with US hosts already) and forgo the old computers?

Thank you for the information. I’m not too familiar on the Linux system, but does it perform better than windows in this senerio?

I want to “host” if that’s the right term, so I can use my US internet as my VPN. My router is a Asus ac88u, I’m hesitant to use openwrt because currently I have two Asus routers and is using the mesh feature. Therefore I was hoping to use a old laptop instead.

Because nothing is reliable within the great firewall. Epressvpn is the only one that I know of works most of the time in China, but it’s very slow and expensive

Okay so you need to circumvent blocked services using a hosted computer in the US? Got it. You should be able to setup a Virtual server and run it off there I’m betting.
