How can I be sure that my VPN is working?

Search for ip and dns leak, do the tests if your real ip or dns pops up its not working. (Some vpns tend to have dns leaks more often than others).
Search on Google what’s my IP address.
Checking your IP address with a browser isn’t fast enough to really tell. By the time you click that ok button you could be leaking. And I have Comcast and I have had the Utopia DNS hijack. Probably one of the more serious threats because it changes the the settings of your router modem…
On top of that my network at the moment is slightly or very insecure because I decided I wanted to talk to my lightbulbs which is cool.
I just haven’t VLAN’d and DMZ’d because I haven’t had the time and I screwed up my OpenWRT VPN Router.
I modified something on the board which was stupid.
I have lots of holes to plug…
But my VPN is suspiciously going on off especially when I am looking for 1980 Mormon rap.
Another simple way, if you are familiar with routing is to run one traceroute to for example 8.8.8.8 with and without the VPN active. The routes should go a different way when it’s active. However, if you’re trying to figure out if there are some leaks in the network, this solution won’t help much unfortunately.
You can install browser addon which is checking your ip every second
I usually just go to iplocation.net. It tells you your IP address and roughly where it is. If it’s not near you, you’re using a VPN.
I have Proton VPN and the logs are sketchy constantly disconnecting
But this is on IOS and I am not Toring
So many obvious ways to figure this one out. Basic common sense. 
I hear ya , it’s all good … I guess I just rather use the search engine and possibly gain better knowledge of what I am seeking rather then waiting for people to reply on a forum.
I like my answer fast and to the point instead of waiting for people to chime in stuff that’s either good or completely wrong.
