Has anyone else gotten scammed by express vpn?

ik danny has this sponsor a lot and this wouldn’t be the first company to be a scam, not blaming danny whatsoever, i signed up by my own choice. but has anyone else had problems with them or any other vpn?

i had my credit card stolen last night when i signed up for express vpn, literally woke up and my bank was like “heyyy…someone committed credit card fraud😊and guess who’s the victim!”

i mean now the hacker and the company can’t use my card anymore, and i’m not that tech savvy so…this is good news(?)

hi i’m 20 years old and never learned anything, adulting scares me.

EDIT: explained more in a reply to a comment, the only reply i made—just to clear things up

I use express vpn and never had a problem with it. It sounds like you froze your credit card which is a good step! Did you use a password for express vpn that you use often? That could have been how the hacker got it. I can’t imagine a credible vpn service would steal your information.

Express VPN is a perfectly fine company, you likely got it stolen somewhere else.

this is one of the reasons i just wanna live off grid, can my wimpy body handle it? no. can i handle people stealing my identity or passwords? also no, but i’ll take my chances with splinters and bears🙏

I’m not saying it’s not Express VPN, but just because you signed up for it and the next day got the message from your bank does not mean it was from that.

It is entirely possible that some random website you bought something from a year ago just had an incident and the timing happened to line up with you signing up for Express VPN.

Companies have data breach reporting requirement and bigger companies like Express VPN would be news (especially one “centered” around security)

You probably signed up on a fishing site. Basically it’s pretending to be express vpns cite but it’s not. They buy a url that’s super similar to express vpns. It might have a one letter difference like it’s missing one s. They do this knowing you might miss type it and forget the second S. They also pay google to be in the top searches. For someone who says they aren’t tech savvy it’s vary likely you clicked the wrong website and gave your info to them unknowingly.

I just signed up for Express VPN because I wanted to watch a show live that was unavailable in my location due to football but I couldn’t figure it out in time to watch the show son I cancelled and got my refund the next day. I had to chat with an agent to get the refund, but it was a very easy process and it left me feeling good about the company.

tom scott made a video on vpns that you might find useful or interesting! sorry that it seems like they scammed you!

“scammed by expressvpn” lmao

Privacy.com allows you to make 1 time use cards and cards that lock to one online store. You link these cards to your bank account. You can easily cancel and put spending limits on all of your digital cards. I really love the app and the extra layer of security on my bank account, hope this helps for the future :folded_hands:

Credible VPN service, I fear what you deam credible.

“ExpressVPN CIO Daniel Gericke is among three men fined $1.6 million by the US Department of Justice for hacking and spying on US citizens on behalf of the government of the UAE (United Arab Emirates)”

I don’t care if it’s an individual, that company’s dead in my eyes.

SO REAL (but frfr im sorry you’re going through this)

i signed up thru the app on my computer. i had a subscription but then i cancelled it. but didn’t delete the app. then i got a notification saying “hey your subscription expired, renew it now” (all this from the app) and i was like “oh sure i’ll sign up again cause i need it for college” and then my bank went all :police_car_light::scream:

it’s been resolved now with my bank, but i just wanted to see if anyone else had issues with vpn’s or if people think they’re worth it/are reliable. plus i’ve heard stories of express vpn keeping your credit card info and billing you even after you’ve cancelled subscriptions. and that it has to be disputed.

they’ve been proven to keep charging you after you cancel your subscription, and to change your account info from ‘active’ ‘deactivated’ to go “see, your account isn’t cancelled, so we were allowed to charge you”

it’s fine now  at least it wasn’t my debit card, now THAT would’ve put me in shambles

That sounds like you clicked a fake pop up or something… adware and malware can make pop ups that look like they’re from an app on your computer but they’re not actually.

yikes…how can i check if it’s legit? sorry, ik this isn’t that subreddit but again, i’m not tech savvy😭

It’s kinda hard honestly because they usually look super legit. Having an antivirus can help but those aren’t perfect. It’s easier to know if you’ve been to Sus websites lately because then you’re like “oh ok, suspicious things happening since I went to a Sus website… I picked up a virus”

Don’t ever click and/or put information into an unsolicited text or email. If you are worried that there is a problem with the original sign up, try to find some way of contacting the company. Also, Google the information you were given and scam. A lot of times, these things will pop up as a well-known scam.
Edit: not the from the actual company. Also, change all your passwords not to forget your email and definitely all your bank accounts. It may be a coincidence that you just signed up. Companies have data breaches all the time that are not forthcoming to their customers.
