I decided to go ahead and figure this out after the thread with /u/Forgetfultiger and /u/PM_YOUR_BOOBS_PLS_ It is definitely possible, as I just did it. So here we go… This guide is for Android devices, although I would imagine it can work similarly for Apple devices if you are able to access the Japanese iTunes storefront.
-
Firstly, download an application called ‘Psiphon’, it is a VPN app and will allow you to appear as if you are in Japan. This is the app I use regularly to access games like Show by Rock and Yokai Watch PuniPuni. There is no need to get the ad-free version. Set your region to Japan and tunnel it for whole device mode.
-
Secondly, make a Japanese Gmail account and add it to your device. You should probably create the account in your browser at Google.jp to be safe.
-
Once you have this out of the way, launch the Google Play store, slide in from the left and switch to the Japanese account you just made. If you stay on your old account it will not switch to the Japanese store. Once you are on the Japanese store you need to install the Line Music app.
-
Make a new Facebook account on your device and set the region to Japan
-
Make a new Line account and link it to the Facebook account that you just made. You might be able to do this with an existing Line account, but I’m honestly not sure. Line uses your phone number and/or Facebook account to register your location, so probably not.
-
Launch Line Music and log into the Line account you just made. You’re good to go. At this point you can disable Psiphon as there is no more need for it. Once you are actually granted access to the service you no longer need the VPN turned on to use it although I would keep it in case you need to access the Japanese Play store for anything like paying for another month of access.
The service works kind of like Spotify if you’re used to that. You can save up to 100 songs to your device to listen to at any time, but it looks like they’re in an encrypted folder so there’s no point in trying to use this to build your collection. If you go to the ‘shop’ section of the app you can add more usage time to your account, but currently there are no options to buy music - only streaming. Line is still building their libraries so some stuff like BABYMETAL are not on there, but you will easily find bands like tricot, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, SCANDAL and Go!Go! 7188.
The current prices of the service are:
Unlimited: 1 month
Regular ¥960
Student: ¥600
20 Hours of streaming over 30 days
Regular: ¥500
Student: ¥300
30 Day Ticket
Regular: ¥960
Student: ¥600
I don’t know what the difference is between 1 month and 30 day tickets so don’t ask. You can pay through the Play Store, you can find places to buy Japanese Play Store gift cards easily through Google. Most places will just email you the code to redeem. No clue if Language Schools count for the student option.
