Google free trial Premium AI Scam

Had a 2 TB Google One plan, paid yearly plan until 25 Feb 2025.
I bought a Pixel 8 pro, got 4 months of free Google One Premium.

I made the big mistake of activating the “free trial”, this is a scam, they converted my 2 TB Google One plan to Premium AI, being a more expensive plan, so now the yearly plan I had already paid for ends on February 5. Moreover, I think the old plan doesn’t exist anymore, they scammed me out of it.

So instead of 4 months for free, I get 20 days removed from my yearly plan. The premium AI features I was curious to try, but I think it is too early, they are going to be useless.

Realized this after 1 hour of activating it, chatted with support, nothing to do! Anyone has suggestions?

I’m now coming back from an hour+ long chat with support about this and suffice to say I’m more frustrated than before, having heard their “explanation”.

This is outright a scam that steals our hard earned money in the disguise of a “free trial”.

Oooh I’m so pissed right now and this will not be my only post about this…

Also, we should get this heard on news outlets like the Verge or whatever. It could even become a class action suit.

The trial said in the sign up for it, that your current plan would end.

After discussing with support and not getting anywhere I asked them to take it to management. Today I got refunded the lost ~6 months.

I was scammed out of 6 months of my Google one 100 GB plan.

Had the same thing happen. Randomly noticed I was being charged 20 bucks instead of 3. Google quietly cancelled the $3 subscription for a month or two, saying “cancelled” for the $3 subscription and adding a blank Google AI Premium subscription payment, then suddenly started charging $20.

Didn’t even notice I was paying $15+ extra until a few months later when I noticed a giant gap in my checking book. They never once gave me a notification that my plan was changing like I would’ve expected so I had no reason to even think it had changed.

And of course you can’t refund it, let alone older payments, despite the fact that I never purposely signed up for it. So thanks Google for stealing 50 bucks from me…

Same issue. Same dumb explanation from a Tech giant. They can’t even do promo billing right. Where is the class action lawyer on this. It is very black and white.

I had 3 months AI premium trail, after the trial ended, I paid the full price for 1 more month. When that ended, I lost the annual storage space that I have prepaid, with 6 months remaining but unfortunately no longer able to use. The Manila rep don’t understand how this should work, try as they may, it is fruitless and infuriating explaining.

I paid full price for that 1 month, Google applied no credit from the original prepaid annual plan. If there was, they should not be charging at full price. You would think the number explain themselves, but no, the reps are so deep into their wall they can’t understand sh*t.

The money from the annual prepaid plan went into black hole, but Google is telling you, that money is theirs to keep, because you, the consumer, upgraded. Note there was never any notes about upgrades, not on the product name, not on the order receipt. GOOGLE IS EFFECTIVELY TAKING YOUR PREPAID PLAN MONEY WHEN YOU SIGN UP FOR THE FREE TRAIL.

If there is a class action lawyer reading this, please do something. I actually said on the call with the Google Rep, I beg you, please escalate this to a manager, because this is so black and white and common sense. It is such a shame one with billions of profit would screw consumers over $20, $30, $40.

nothing much you can do about it. seen many complain about it but i dont see anyone is getting help with the issue

I had the same experience. Only noticed I was paying a crazy monthly fee a couple of months after the “free trial” ended. You can change the subscription to one more like your previous one though - it’s just verify well hidden.

When you are choosing your sub to change to, scroll to the bottom of the page and there will be an option to show other plans - the smaller subs are then available. Very sneaky google.

I emailed [email protected] after losing the last 6 months of my subscription to their vague trial terms. After a week of ‘back and forth’ that felt more like a game of email tennis, Google repeatedly told me it was my issue, and an agreement as part of taking the trial, but they could not provide evidence this was the case. So, I cranked it up a notch, escalated it, and guess what? They’ve refunded a full year of my Google One subscription back to my credit card! :man_facepalming:
Persist and you’ll get that refund. :white_check_mark: :money_bag:

I just posted a similar, lengthy post in this subreddit (the r/google subreddit unsurprisingly removed my post despite carefully following their rules):

https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleOne/comments/1irbl3e/please_read_google_is_purposely_canceling_prepaid/

I am also posting copies of this comment across multiple relevant posts and forums. I’m hoping to consolidate the hundreds of similar complaints I’ve found scattered across different forums in just the past couple of weeks.

In short, Google cancels prepaid users’ accounts without notice or consent (even if they expressly request to revert back to their original plan prior to the end of the “upgrade”), refuses refunds for remaining balances, and forces users to purchase new plans to regain access. Contrary to what some comments suggest, users cannot “switch back” to their underlying plan prior to canceling the free trial - this option DOES NOT exist. Even if users contact Google before the “upgrade” ends, Google refuses to allow reverting back to the underlying plan. Simply put: Google forces cancellation of users’ original plans by forcing them to cancel the “upgrade.” They then unlawfully keep the user’s money and have the audacity to say (quoting verbatim from Google support’s email to me): “You can always purchase another plan.”

If this was in the fine print, perhaps Google could attempt to justify the forced switch. However, Google is so arrogant that they’re not only relying on a non-existent TOS, but what they’re doing directly contradicts their actual TOS which states: “If you cancel your subscription, you will retain access to Google One for the remaining term of your existing subscription.” This is particularly infuriating because I had actually read the Google One TOS prior to accepting the free trial and specifically relied on this provision when deciding to accept.

Can anything be done? Unfortunately no, and that’s by design. This appears to be a carefully-crafted and deliberate business policy that aligns with Google’s historical pattern of treating legal violations as mere business expenses (e.g., $391.5M settlement for misleading location tracking, $170M FTC fine for YouTube’s privacy violations, €4.3B EU antitrust fine for Android). The specific motivators are unknown, but likely include accelerated AI Premium adoption, forcing users into monthly billing models, and collecting valuable trial data for development.

This policy undoubtedly went through multiple levels of risk management and legal review. Unfortunately, their metrics must have shown that alienating loyal customers, fighting class action lawsuits, and facing federal investigations was worth whatever the ultimate prize turns out to be.

Up until about a month ago, I was a long-time Google customer and advocate, and my family was deeply entrenched in the Google ecosystem. Just like a lot of users in the comments here and everywhere I’ve been reading, this particular experience – though seemingly minor compared to others – has unsettled me more than usual. In the end, I decided to turn it into a teaching moment for my kids, and we made the choice to ditch all Google products permanently. I’m not naive, I know this decision is really just an inconvenience for me and has absolutely zero impact on Google or its bottom line (that said, who knows, maybe my voice will pop up in my kids’ heads someday, haunting them if they ever find themselves in a position to make similar ethical decisions, haha).

Got it this morning - hit “dismiss”.

It is still possible to downgrade!! https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleOne/comments/1axtlik/how_do_i_cancel_ai_premium_without_canceling/

yeah this is why I’ve just basically given up taking advantage of any free trial subscription offers. It’s never in your interest. it’s almost always in someone else’s interest.

Google one also lost a lot of value when they removed the VPN and all the photo features are now free for everybody as with the dark web.

frankly, I would just encourage people to save more s*** locally. rethink how much cloud storage they really need.

How do you access it i didn’t get that offer pop up with my pixel 8??? also i got a chromebook plus and it won’t redeem

I downgraded to the 2TB Google One plan in August, and I got a refund for the remaining 9 months of my previous annual subscription! To top it off, I made quite a bit thanks to the exchange rate difference.

I am so angry about this. Very poor customer service from Google here.

I had an annual 2TB plan set to renew in December. I tried the AI “free” trial but I cancelled it before I was due to pay of it. Then it turned out I was no longer on a plan. If I want to continue on my 2TB plan I have to pay for the next 4 months (which I already paid for). So the free trial will end up costing me @ £32!

I managed to get through to Google One telephone support by calling Google Play support - I couldn’t find another way. The number I found, someone picks up then hangs up immediately.

What I have now been told is that Google prorated my remaining balance to pay for extra months of the AI plan. However, this is done without my knowledge or agreement. I argued for about an hour, but didn’t really get anywhere, just repeated explanations of what happened, which I already understood. I have now escalated it and hope to speak to a manager in a few hours. The best support could do was give me 2 weeks temporary storage.

I am seriously going to look at alternative storage options now. I just feel scammed. I hardly even used Gemini AI. I’m actually paying for ChatGPT instead, though even the free option seems better than Gemini.

Same thing happened to me - joined Google AI Premium trial, cancelled, instead they forced my Google One membership to revert to the premium one until it ran out two weeks later. Chatting with customer service was zero help. I was only able to get a refund for my Google One membership once I filed a complain with the Better Business Bureau.

I tried a Google One AI Premium Trial - set to start paying $19.99 p/m on an approaching date. I believe I canceled it the same day but in trying to confirm, I can’t find ANY emails referencing the trial anywhere or references to currently being in the trial period. They stated: “You won’t be charged if you cancel before your free trial ends, and we’ll remind you 7 days before”. Meanwhile, I’m accepting bets on whether that reminder arrives or not…

Hi, not sure if you’ve resolved this, but I was able to go to settings, change membership plan, and then below all the AI options to upgrade, there were options to downgrade back to my normal plan. These options weren’t available when I just clicked on plans, which only showed the expensive AI ones.
