FYI: You can use UCSD's VPN when abroad and use US streaming services etc

…if you’re okay with it.

Official details: Virtual Private Networks (VPN) at UCSD

You simply download Cisco’s AnyConnect client and log into vpn.ucsd.edu with your active directory account. Just keep it running in the background.

For those who don’t know what a virtual private network offers: All your Internet traffic now goes through UCSD, encrypted. You can fake your online location to servers. Keep in mind that you will get slower Internet speed this way.

Bonus: Also works on iOS. Use this guide or download this app from Cisco and let it configure everything for you whenever you wish to connect.

Also works on most Android phones. Just download the app.

Couple notes:

Make sure to select “allthruucsd”, otherwise it won’t work.

Turn off your torrent client while you use it.

It’s also a pretty good idea to use it for just about anything secure (banking, Facebook, email, etc) so those services won’t freak out that you’re overseas. Even if you’re on sketchy WiFi in the US the vpn offers a level of protection.

Or if you’re overseas for en extended period of time and using those services normally (like me), don’t jump between using it through VPN and without. They will totally freak out.
