First time ever seeing a IP from Antarctica connect to me whats the likely hood of it actually being a researcher and not just someone being funny with a VPN?

People at military bases pirate too.

lol what else are you going to do in Antarctica?

Depends on where you look:

Are they torrenting Happy Feet?

I saw a clip of someone on a military research base in Antarctica, and he said they had like 30tb of movies and crap because the internet was only for a very limited period of time, and low quality.

The geo location databases are sketchy at best. You can’t really correlate an IP address with a physical location.

How many ip addresses are even allocated to Antarctica.

It’s a penguin downloading Linux.

Netflix just removed House of Cards down there, and the researcher wanted to find out what happened in the election

What theme do you use?

Maybe it’s the first airliner

This IP address is actually based in Belgium from QuxLabs, and it’s a TOR exit node.

That’s kinda what I was thinking never heard of any VPN service offering connections there. The guy or gal must really love Strike Witches.

There has to be servers there. McMurdo and South Pole Station need internet for everyone living there, not just the researchers. Not to mention some other countries have their own research stations as well.

In theory it would make more sense than streaming because they probably don’t have much bandwidth out there. If I was a researcher in Antarctica I would 1000% bring like 16TB of hard drives and a mini pc to run plex. He probably realized a new season came out of his favorite show and started up sonarr

Windscribe has a “Fake Antarctica” but I have no idea how it shows up.

There’s no cables of any kind to Antarctica.
Until a year ago there was barely any permanent connectivity. There was some Iridium coverage and some intermittent satellites. HFC radio was still used commonly.
Starlink maritime at $50k per month (last time I looked at pricing) is now pretty much the only game in town.
No, I doubt you’re going to be hosting a VPN on that link.

Windscribe and Nord

Definitely not Nord nor a VPN, it’s a Tor node and it’s based out of Sweden, just phony geo data pointing it to Antarctica.

That was an April Fools joke a few years back. Connect to VPN servers in Antarctica | NordVPN
