You can’t VPN only specific tabs. It also does not run on Linux at this time.
I’ve been using it on desktop and mobile and had good experience with it. I’d say it’s worth it.

Opera VPN is, like most free VPNs, linked to USA or China government or advertising companies. It is better to use no VPN than using such free VPNs.

It’s fast-enough for a gigabit connection (I get 600-700mb/s both with and without VPN) and well-seeded Linux distros easily reach speeds in excess of 400mb/s. I can’t comment on whether or not you get inundated with google captcha’s because I don’t use Windows often enough to know (I’m primarily a Linux user so have barely used the VPN so far and just subscribed to it to support Mozilla.)
