Download speed fast with VPN but very slow without

Hello,

I have an occasional issue with my seedbox (rapidseedbox) which tends to persists for a few days at a time. The problem is that the download speed from my seedbox suddenly becomes very slow (~60kb/s). However, when I use a VPN (Not including the rapidseedbox OpenVPN) the download speed becomes perfectly adequate. I have no idea what might be causing this and was hoping someone might have a solution aside from using a VPN.

Youre probably getting throttled by your isp. When they recognize the torrent traffic they throttle that, but when youre on the vpn they cant see what kind of traffic it is and therefore better speeds.

If its ftp traffic that can also be throttled so maybe try sftp on port 22.

check your sbox speedtest page without vpn and see if it’s consistent with what you experienced. Peering is a thing sadly. Like around some long months ago my route to home is fucked up during a broken big undersea cable. You might need to use CF Warp or 3rd party VPN if the issue persists,or switch to other providers but make sure to check their respective speedtest page first

VPNs often taken a different route than the route the datacenter sends traffic to your ISP, this is why some folks choose to use cloudflare to stream from their seedbox, cloudflare has better routes.

You can try talking to RSB about doing a backbone reroute, some other vendors have tools for this kind of thing. It is likely they will ask for an [mtr] (mtr(8) — Arch manual pages) test run.

You can see for yourself though, what the problem might be by running mtr:
