I’ve never used Tor before but was looking for a free vpn service I could use to visit sites like twitter etc and be anonymous. Does tor work well for this sort of stuff, I’m not looking for dark web stuff …lol just want to be a anon rando on the internet sometimes with the way our gov is going. If tor is decent for this would it be better to use the browser or setup a proxy? I use linux and can install the browser as it’s in my repo or I can install a proxy in a container on my proxmox server. I see it has a few docker containers on github…are these docker containers a decent way of doing this and if so can somebody recommend a container that’s kept up to date by the author as there’s a few that don’t look to be kept up. Just curious what the experience would be like vs a traditional vpn.
Tor is not a VPN.
VPNs do not make you anonymous!
Tor Browser makes you anonymous (as long as you do not leak your own identity).
You most likely just want Tor Browser. Download it from the official site to have the up to date version. There is no reason to use any docker container. Just using Tor as a proxy will hide your internet activity from your ISP but will not make you anonymous.
Just curious what the experience would be like vs a traditional vpn.
Tor is much slower and some sites block Tor users.
I would first suggest reading the up on official tor documentation so you can have a better understanding of what is and isn’t, what will do for you and what it cant etc.
If you want to be anonymous online while using social media you must be very careful to not use anything such a email, username, date of birth, your name etc. Or anything that links back to your real “clear net” identity. You should create a sockpupet account…make sure use a VPN or tor while creating this account.
I think tor maybe a little over bored for your use case…a decent VPN should be fine your OPsec usecase.
It’s not a VPN…
Also, it’s extremely slow.
Generally speaking
Tor can spoof your IP Address, and thus your IP-Based location, so yes just like VPN
BUT, some sites may block traffic coming from Tor exit nodes, thus making it unusable on these sites
Also browsing the web using Tor is extremely slow, so if you just want a casual free vpn you should look somewhere else
