Does a VPN no longer work for MLB.TV?

I got a subscription to mlb.tv for becoming an Orioles Birdland member and would love to not have to use cable to watch the Orioles. But in looking online, there’s been a few people saying MLB caught on. Was anyone able to use it in the latter part of the season last year?

They started cracking down last year and made it a huge pain to use one. sometimes i think they specifically come to Reddit and ask what everyone is using to start their list of things to block.

Express VPN worked great for like a season and a half but not anymore. Back to the high seas I guess.

Last year, I had to change my VPN location until I got a connection. It is hit and miss

It’s hit and miss. They do catch on to IP addresses associated with VPNs. Surfshark stopped working, but oddly enough, by Google VPN did work. It worked less well when Google stopped letting you chose the location of the connection. They replaced that with using a center closer or further from you. When I chose the latter, I was blacked out from only four teams instead of my usual six. I’m going into this year with a different VPN and hoping for the best. I may need to look for other avenues to stream though.

VPN didn’t work for me out here in SoCal for dodgers and angels games. I used the alternative streaming sites that may or may not exist. Rhymes with mlb dreams. I just pay for cable now and use mlbtv to stream rest of games around league.

Two years ago I had Nord VPN. By the end of the season it didn’t work on any of my Fire TV sticks but worked fine on my computer.

I don’t use a VPN but they blacked me out of all the Midwest teams after about the middle of last season. Then accused me of using one when I called to find out why.

I think maybe they just don’t like having fans.

So, I think I found a way around this. Uninstall the app. Redownload the app and then when it asks to use your location (I believe this is via GPS) during the setup, hit deny. It says you cannot watch the streams without giving permission, but I haven’t had any issues so far today.

I use Proton VPN. It’s free. Anytime I had issues, all I had to do was disconnect from my wifi, then reconnect, and it would work again.

It doesn’t work on my phone, mlb app uses your phones geo location instead of vpn location. Can’t get it to work on my fire stick, did all the work arounds i found online but no dice.

Usually works on my computer, when it doesn’t I usually just use to do a couple attempts and it’s good

I used one all of last year. Sometimes would have a hiccup here and there, but for the most part worked all season. The only time it didn’t and I had to :pirate_flag:, was the playoffs. Though this year I won’t likely bother with a VPN since I have 0 interest in watching the White Sox

I just heard that MLB isn’t going to blackout local games anymore.

I put a Raspberry Pi at my parents house with OpenVPN, they have symmetrical fiber and it’s my workaround. :innocent:

It worked end of last year. Hope it still does this year. I’m not paying $75 for streaming or cable just to watch Phillies.

For some reason is seemed to depend on device. MLB tv on my firestick would not work with a vpn. But it worked fine using the same vpn on my laptop.

I have private internet access has anyone gotten this to work?!

I know some people that go an entire season with no problems. I know others who were caught. I think it probably depends on the VPN. If you use one that’s always bouncing around, it probably raises flags if you’re watching from London today, Sacramento the day before, Munich, then Dallas, etc. Pay for a quality, consistent one.

Nord works but not for spring training games. It works once the regular season starts. Also on some Android devices you have to do some extra stuff to get it to work I think. Here check this guide: https://www.anonymistic.com/best-vpn-for-mlb-tv-to-bypass-blackouts/

reposting from below:

got it to work on my Windows 11 PC using Chrome Browser. The problem seems to be all that extra security junk Nord gives you for free. Turn it all off, clear your History in Chrome, turn off sync (if on) back out of Chrome, pick where you want to travel. Make sure location setting are off in Windows, go back to chrome, and sign into mlb.com. Pick your game, and you’re set.
