My job is fully remote (sans a few times a year when we go in for team building) but has a limited list of states we can work from.
While working remotely we log into a VPN. I am looking to work from a state that is not approved for working from. Could I use my own VPN, then log into our work VPN to prevent the company from seeing where I am? Im not overly concerned with being tracked another way.
Any opinions are appreciated!
Just like every other time this is posted. No. Its not going to work.
Kinda. Just joined this sub so listen to the other guy. Heres my take.
You’d need to vpn your router. Your work won’t allow you to install software and you can’t have two vpn clients running simultaneously. The router should drop all connections if it disconnects or your true location and IP will be revealed. Additionally, you would probably want this vpn to be private, so that your public ip is not associated with a known vpn service, and so that you are the only one who connects to it… Data privacy and all that, you very well could be sued for using a vpn provider and getting caught… in fact, I’d absolutely count on it, as well as some tax issues if you do.
If you do it all right, they will have absolutely no idea where you are and the traffic will all look right. That said… if you’re starting from where you are now, there’s no way in hell you’re going to figure it out AND pull it off without eventually getting caught. You’re going to need help and it’s going to cost you some money in hardware and server fees.
Not terribly hard from a technical perspective, but the logistics could be a pain… depending
here is a video explaining what you can do : https://youtu.be/A30CKRstgpE
Take a look at this - it is a “hardware” vpn and will be able to be setup in a state that you are allowed to work from. You just have to have someone in a state that you are allowed to work from where you can setup the VPN server. Whatever their upload speed is your “download” speed.

EDIT: Your employer will see you connected from wherever the server is at. Let’s say that you have the server in AZ, you can be in Antarctica, Europe, Australia, etc and your employer would see it as you are in AZ.
Of course I am here searching these subs for the same info. It’s possible to add a VPN to my router so that when I log in they can’t tell where it is coming from? Assuming my connection is private and no one else has access the only issue really is the taxes and them knowing you broke company policy. If I use star link that is satellite, does the ip show up as the address the star link bill goes to?
So if I currently live in a valid state I set this up following your instructions then I can potentially use the travel router and work from anywhere without them knowing?
Pretty much. There are other ways you can get caught but the Internet side would be difficult. There is no 100% in the computing world anymore but this is close. You NEED to remember that you have to setup the client router drops the Internet connection until the VPN is reconnected for any reason. Further, you don’t want to be on a video call with the Leaning Tower of Piza behind you when you are supposed to be somewhere else.
Lol show up on zoom with some monkeys or nonsense in the back ground. Thanks for the info and actually trying to be useful. I appreciate it.
Nothing is 100% in our world. I know of several people that have successfully done what I describe for years. I also know of others that got caught due to posts on social media, forgetting to turn on the kill switch or went on Zoom with something in the background that gave them away.
