I’d been connecting to wireguard servers just fine up until yesterday’s evening. Now it wouldn’t connect to literally any server regardless of protocol (ovpn/wireguard) unless I use shadowsocks bridge with v2ray. My ISP is Rostelekom.
Can any of you Russian folks confirm if you’re experiencing the same issues right now or is it just me?
Back in March, the Russian government did say it would crack down on VPNs. My friends in Russia who use Mullvad haven’t had any problems so far. They’re using it on their iPhone. It connects to wireguard UDP perfectly fine
They said they’d crack down on resources that promote VPN usage and post guides on how to set up VPNs to bypass censorship, not the VPNs itself. A lot of the RU tech websites and forums removed VPN-related materials to avoid bans because of this.
Plenty of VPNs have been blocked already since the invasion started, and plenty of other VPNs still work. Officially Russia allows VPNs to be a thing as long as they comply with the Russian laws aka block access to the same resources as Russian ISPs do.
With how Roskomnadzor blocks things, ISPs may not even know what’s being blocked and will simply answer “we don’t block anything on our end”.
AFAIK every ISP in Russia is forced to install DPI “black boxes” on their network that which RKN controls and they can filter traffic remotely with a flip of the switch basically, without going through the individual ISPs.
But I guess Rostelecom may know what’s what since, supposedly, they own the company that manufactures these DPI boxes.
Huh, didn’t know about that. Wonder if other VPNs like Proton were working too during this period.
On that note, Mullvad recently added an option to override server IPs in the app, email support and ask for IP overrides. I think RKN blocks, or used to block, Wireguard VPNs by dropping the handshake packet for blacklisted IPs so that connection to the server is never established, in theory overriding server IPs can work as long as you don’t share the new IPs with RKN
Well, assuming they don’t already block them whether accidentally or intentionally.
On March 28th, things were good for my friend, but now she says it’s getting a bit harder to connect. However, she can still connect to LA and Chicago from Russia.
