I’ve been using the free ProtonVPN-server in the Netherlands for a couple of weeks. Websites like google and facebook usually warn me about “suspicious activity” when I log in using a VPN, but the last couple of days they’ve been warning me about log ins from Dubai. Today google said I was located in the Netherlands, but all the text on facebook was in arabic. This worries me a lot. Could someone be accessing my connection somehow?
UPDATE: To clarify, I’m not in Dubai and I have never been there. I’m in another country connected to the Netherlands-server.
No, that’s just incorrect Geolocation database information. Nothing to worry about, just annoying.
Are You using Android?
Probably you’ve enable Location history. Google will detect location based on your location history provided by Android. Even if you connected it will show your real location.
Try Disable location history And Clear Cached.
May be it will work. I’ve experienced same before and i was concerned about this. Finally get it done.
Yes.
Clear your caches. Clear your DNS. Check for DNS leaks.
Check your IP geolocation.
Most likely, Google is using an outdated geolocation database, which displays the information incorrectly. You can ensure that your ProtonVPN connection is in order if you connect to a server and open https://ipleak.net/. You can see your public IP address and assigned location in the results.
You need to change your browsers timezone and locale.
It’s still possible to work out where you are even if you’re VPN’d.
Yes, I’ve cleared my caches, but I’m not familiar with DNS at all.
My IP location seems to be the Netherlands though
I had a look and according to the website I’m on a Netherlands-ip adress as I should, but facebook is still in arabic for some strange reason.
Hm, I think I phrased the title wrong. I’m not even close to Dubai. I’m in a european country, connecting to the Netherlands-server, but suddenly all websites think I’m in Dubai. I was worried that someone might accessing my connection somehow.
Yes, I cleared my history, cache and cookies. But what worries me is that I’ve never been to Dubai or connected to a server there.
An IP geolocation database has a wrong country associated with that IP. So any website that uses that database appears in wrong localization.
Not an uncommon thing with VPN providers.
trace the server route to see where your packets are going, who is handling them and what servers are telling you to fuck yourself.
This is because Google is using an outdated geolocation database, which displays the information incorrectly. Also, if you don’t clear your cookies or log out of Google, Google will know your location based off of your account, but this is not due to an issue in ProtonVPN.
Go there and see what data your browser is putting out for regional information.
Huh, that’s interesting! I’ve never heard about that. But how come that it’s only happened when I’ve been using a VPN and not when I’m online without a VPN?
Because the domestic IPs from your ISP rarely change geolocation.
