Just canceled my Unlimited subscription, and lost access to Proton VPN immediately, even though I should be able to use the product until mid-February. Why is that?

That’s not how canceling works with Proton. They drop your features instantly on all products and issue your account credits for whatever the remaining time is for the subscription you paid for originally.

So if you cancel with 2 months left in a 12m sub, then your account gets 2 months worth of credits

There is probably a difference between cancelling and downgrading.

Downgrading is immediate with account credit.

But according to my dashboard it says if you cancel you can keep using benefits until subscription ends.

You also have the option to stop auto renewing, then it stops after your time is up.

But you get advertisement(constantly) saying that you should check your subscription because it ends soon, although in my case it’s running until the end of 2026,

This is…terrible, to say the least…

Whatever you choose, basically you lose with this method.

If you want to change service, you have to cancel literally the day before, hoping it will literally drop immediately, if not some days before. If you cancel it a few months before as usual when don’t want to renew, you get credit that you will never use.

And if you wait the last day, and forget, you may pay for another entire year…

Lol but that username though

It is actually better because it allows you to resubscribe with the same credits at a later date or use it for some other plan like a VPN only sub.

Just set a reminder on the day before in your calendar

I doubt OP will be of your opinion.

If you stay with the service and just want to change plan, sure. But if he wanted to leave, he now lost 2 months, cannot re-buy them back, if not loosing money (as the 1-year plan cost less than 2 months individually) and used the server 2 months less than what he paid for.

It also means you’re not stuck for up to two years if you choose to leave, so you have more freedom. I prefer it that way
