Does anyone have a recommendation for the best (fastest, lowest latency) mobile VPN?
I don’t want to see or very minimal reduction in UWB. For example, a vpn I was using capped out to around 500Mbps, however UWB was pulling 2+Gbps.
I’d think that speeds while using a VPN would be more affected by the server you choose.
I have used mullvad VPN and proton VPN. Both are great, no issues and a good server list.
VPN speed is limited by a number of things ; in short, pushing bits through with software doing the encryption is going to use a lot of cpu, and its likely the problem.
If your VPN offers Wireguard that would be the most optimized protocol, openvpn isn’t as optimized (wireguard is in-kernel, and openvpn needs to pass a lot of data around between the kernel and the program itself to encrypt/decrypt and talk to the network. wireguard does it all inside the kernel, no extra program required)
As others have alluded to, where your vpn server is located and the physical network infrastructure locations between, can play a lot into the latency. (vpn server in dallas, verizon routing from there, through chicago, to you in NYC, as a contrived example) Perhaps not so much the speed though, as most reasonable providers of anything nowadays should be using at least 10gigE on their servers, if not 25, or 100.
