Beginner setup for safe torrenting?

Hello fellow torrenter! I have torrented in the past and I would like to be safe doing so going forward. I currently run Ubuntu as an OS and use nord vpn to torrent as a safe guard. The torrent software I use is transmission. Anything I can improve with this setup for more efficient and safety?

Get a VPN that supports port forwarding to speed up seeding and leeching. I think the only decent ones are Proton and AirVPN.

Safety first: I don’t think you can bind your VPN interface to Transmision… so that’s the first thing to investigate. If you can, do it immediately.

Btw, I believe that’s why many here recommend Qbit as a client, because the binding is so easy, once you’ve identified which interface is the correct one.

You don’t need to change your VPN provider, but you do need to use (i.e. bind) it properly.

Make sure you are binding your torrent client to your VPN network connection.

Definitely look into binding your torrent client to the VPN interface.

I wouldn’t worry about port forwarding unless you use a private tracker or if you are trying to download really old torrents with very few seeds.

as someone from a country with no anti torrent laws do i still need a vpn? and if yes are there any good free ones?

Thanks I’ll look into those vpns. What’s your setup like?

Qbit thanks will do! Really appreciate that suggestion

I couldn’t find a way to do it in Transmission and switched to QBit for this reason. I was only using Transmission because it was the first thing Ubuntu’s software downloader recommended.

Thank you will look into it!

Why not create a new discussion to get very much higher chance for a reply back, instead of asking in another users one?

If you are happy with your current torrenting speed and ISP allows port forwarding and nobody haven’t sent you any warning or notices, then of course you don’t really need a VPN.

qbittorrent + protonVPN with port-forwarding on, the port from the proton app copied to qbit at tools → options → connections → Port used for incoming connections, and tools → options → advanced → network interface = ProtonVPN.

Yea I looked into it as well and haven’t found anything solid yet. Will probs just use qbit

My bad it just popped into my head and i didn’t think it needed a new thread

Thank you

That setup was so verry easy, thank you so much!!

Thank you for sharing those details. I’m gonna try qbit tonight and hopefully all goes well. Will let ya know!

Qbit was super easy to setup and it has worked perfectly for me. I liked the interface in Transmission better, but security is more important to me atm. If I didn’t need a VPN I’d probably stick with Transmission.

Happy to help! Seed and leech away with confidence friend!

I totes agree I setup qbit a few days back and it’s been soooo easy to use
