Greetings friends,
I’m fairly new to VPN (and this particular office) and I’m slowly getting used to the idea that I have to use the office wifi for my internet activity at work.
That said, I’d still like to keep my activities (and text messages) as private as possible. If I use Nord while connected to it, can my employer read my data at all or does it only see that I sent data to the Nord servers? Is there anything I should be careful about? I don’t plan on doing anything illegal or of bad faith, but I still want to maintain my privacy.
I’m sure this is probably a bad question, but I couldn’t find a definitive answer so I thought I’d ask you guys. Many thanks!
If you are using your Personal device and have not installed your enterprise CA in the Trust chain then you should see a warning pop up in case they try to decrypt the data. The tunnel will be closed as soon as there is attempt and would be re established again. Some enterprises would not let the data pass through their routers and gateways if they cannot decrypt it. Hope it helps
I’ve been dying to figure out how to even use nord while connected to work wifi. I’ve been on data for a month trying to figure it out.
Thanks for your input! I’m merely using my android phone, which I probably should have mentioned, and I didn’t install anything provided by my employer. I do connect to the wifi through a personalized wifi login though. I also made sure to active the kill switch on my phone. As far as I can tell, that should keep me safe if the tunnel gets closed, right?
I’m sorry, I realize I’m asking super basic questions.
I suspect whether or not it works depends on how your IT configured your wifi, but beyond that, you’ll have to ask the people here for help
Good luck though!
What happens when you connect your phone to office wifi and enable VPN connection
You are correct. All your employer will see is a single encrypted connection.
Yes that sould work. If you are able to use internet using the login that means that the employer is not blocking traffic which it cannot decrypt.
You are in clear
The VPN connection won’t connect. I’ve tried VPN first before connecting and vice versa. I’ve tried a couple different server types but I’ll systematically go through each one before I give up.
Thanks a lot for your guidance! You rock!
Thanks a ton, that’s a relief to know
That means your enterprise router blocks the connection which it cannot decrypt. Sadly there is no way around it
Rats. Well, thank you for answering! At least I have unlimited data so I can use that with the vpn
