Something changed recently (I assume on Apple’s end) that makes the default stocks app on MacOS no longer load anything when PIA is active. I tried multiple VPN locations, no dice. PIA Mace on/off doesn’t change things either. Stocks will work on iOS & iPadOS with PIA active though. The MacOS app just says “Stocks isn’t connected to the internet” when you launch it. If you quit PIA everything loads fine.
Any idea what I can do to get the app to load stuff again? Rather not go down the split tunnel route as I heard that’s a whole can of worms and can be buggy.
/edit. This seems to have started for me with the Sonoma 14.6 update from a few days ago. Anyone else on 14.6 with the same issue?
/edit. Apple News on MacOS won’t load either.
/edit 3. It seems just the news feed in Apple stocks doesn’t load, the tickers all load fine. I think this ties into the Apple News App not loading content mentioned above.
Wait. This is happening to you too? I also can’t get the News+ app to load with VPN on. I toggled split tunnel and that didn’t do anything. Just noticed this happening today
I am also seeing the same thing with Mullvad VPN. I recently also tried IVPN and NordVPN. All end up with the same result. No News, No stocks (not that I care about the later).
I’m using OpenVPN Connect, and this started happening to me within the last couple days, too. Not PIA (I dropped PIA after the rate hike), but VPN none-the-less.
I have the same issue. I’m running Sonoma 14.6.1 and seeing “Stocks isn’t connected to the Internet” while connected to our corporate VPN using Cisco Secure Client v5.1.1.42.
I’ve tried VPN Unlimited(Keepsolid), which I downloaded from the App Store. It works on stock app without any issue. It seems that VPN from App Store work perfectly. For those who have Nord or Surfshark, try the one that from the App Store instead. If they work fine either, I think PIA should consider moving the app to App Store.
Same here, also ExpressVPN Lightway. I tried removing the ads blocker, tracker blocker, malicious site blocker, but still blocks. Looks like it’s really the VPN who blocks it. Connecting from to the San Francisco, CA, servers by default.
I don’t remember having noticed this before the 14.6.1 update which I did sometime in the last 2 days.
I got Stocks to work by changing the protocol to IKEv2, but it is not the optimal as it doesn’t work with the Advanced Protection features such as block ads and malicious sites. But I use Chrome extensions for that.
Very odd as I believe the MacOS apps are done with catalyst so they are basically the iPad/iOS apps repackaged for macOS. Same codebase. Yet the iPad/iOS versions work fine when I use PIA VPN on those devices.
My settings are pretty basic on MacOS. Using Wireguard, PIA DNS, VPN Killswitch, Advanced Killswitch, PIA MACE, No port forwarding, Allow LAN traffic (not that that matters) and everything else off (no split, no multi hop)
I tried to swap to my own DNS, that didn’t change anything, same for switching to OpenVPN vs Wireguard. Also tried a bunch of different locations and they all won’t connect.
I’m stumped.
