Any working vpns for using linux in china?

I will be visiting china soon and need a vpn for my pc. I have seen that as of February 2024 astrill and letsvpn are the most reliable ones. I’m thinking of letsvpn because it’s cheaper but I don’t know if Linux supports it. Has anyone been to china recently and used a vpn on their Linux machine and it works consistently? I currently have openvpn for my Linux machine but I heard it doesn’t work in china anymore.

vpns in general are running out of steam in china, thanks to deep packet inspection and recent advances that allow passively blocking fully encrypted connections. shadowsocks worked much better for a while, but now recognised servers get blocked pretty quick. how quick seems to depend on what region of the country you’re in.

if you’re only going for a little while, setting up a vps as a shadowsocks server might work for you, but be warned that once your server gets recognised and blocked, your vps service probably won’t let you request an IP change without migrating the whole vps.

depending on your ability and your level of Chinese, you might look into using 机场 (airports, or vps services tailored to the Chinese market).

Let’s VPN doesn’t support Linux, astrill runs well
