A “politically incorrect” “早恋” story in French is hidden without VPN in China

Story “Sleeping at your place” is about Bea’s boyfriend staying at hers but getting kicked out due to nagging. It contains a dumb funny dialogue and “dormir chez toi”, but I guess Duolingo sensed or whatever 广电 government department requested it to censor this story because it hints and thus challenges the taboo of “underage” “relationship” or whatever

it’s not there if not using VPN and I suppose also choosing non China timezone, referring to my post on how to regain league and forum function in China mainland. This is the first story hidden that I’ve read so far

And the flirting part is disappeared too…

Let our Chinese marry ourselves

There are a lot of LGBTI stories, are they not there too?

That’s sad, but unfortunately not particularly surprising. Thank god for VPN’s.

Chinese user here. I’ve always been using Duolingo with my VPN on, so I have never noticed this difference.

Your post made me review the story, which, ironically, isn’t encouraging puppy love in any way. It talks about how incompatible the couple found their ways of life are.

China: Has problems with aging population and declining birth rates

Chinese Government: Keeps discouraging people from sex

Narrator: Begun, the Clone War has

What a ridiculous country. Imagine feeling threatened by a duolingo story.

Not a big deal in China. Flip on the VPN and all’s well. Net savvy people don’t even bat an eye when this happens.

Oh, another content that’s never going to be available in Russian course, thanks for reminding me. :,)

I’d heard a story that duolingo itself was blocked in China?

Very interesting…Can you check “The Honeymoon” in set 1? It’s the one where a woman talks about going on a honeymoon with her wife. Is it still there and is the character still a wife or did they change it somehow?

Bea is in her twenties, it’s not about underage relationships. She is constantly going on dates with people. Are you saying it’s about pre-marital sex?

这种层次的改动,多半是多邻国他们想躲过审查,守住中国市场。唉,资本的力量…

China: Has problems with aging population and declining birth rates

Chinese Government: Keeps discouraging people from sex

But did Mao consent?

Not blocked per se, but the app was removed from Chinese app stores (along with other language learning apps like Memrise). I haven’t checked recently to see if it’s back. Duolingo has however removed all the social features (forums, leagues, discussion on questions, trophies, etc) and now apparently certain learning content as well from their Chinese version. When you open Duolingo in China you can only see the lessons.

it’s unchanged. the LGBT contents in French I learned so far seem intact

I think they meant un-married sex with „underage relationship“

TIL China has a taboo against pre-marital sex too, apparently.

I probably mistook her for the high schoolers Zari/Lily but combined with the “language studying” context it seems the most likely reason to be censored
