3rd party VPN Provider using Wireguard

I saw an older string around the ask of recommended 3rd party VPN’s. I want to re-raise this ask, since Wireguard is fully supported in FWG and FWP.

My main ask is I am looking for a 3rd party that provides FAST throughput. I know I won’t get the same speed as my 1gig Fiber, but I don’t want it to max out 20 mb either. It will be used for Streaming Services mostly…via Policy Based Routing.

I saw some of the recommendations on the Firewalla site, but looking for some user experiences.

Thank you!

nordlynx is the fastest vpn protocol I have used, but not sure how/if you can incorporate it into FWG directly

I have been extremely happy with Windscribe (*referral link) over the years. Generating a Wireguard profile for connection outside of their app does require a Pro license though, which is $49 USD/year. I like the idea of supporting my VPN provider so that they are less incentivized to do something shady with my data. They have a bunch of points-of-presence all over the world, support streaming geo-restricted content, and offer unlimited data as a Pro user.

As far as speed is concerned, I have “1 gig fiber” internet as well (normally average speedtests in the 900 Mbps range down/up) and I’m located in the US. While connected to a server in Montréal I was able to get 331 Mbps down and 320 Mbps up and while connected to a Toronto server I was able to get 426 Mbps down and 175 Mbps up in speed tests while connected through WireGuard, which I think are decently fast.

Now that I re-read this comment, it kind of sounds like an ad, but I assure you that I’m just a happy user.

Edit: I forgot to add that I have been able to stream Netflix and Hulu over the VPN without issue.

ProtonVPN works well!

quick VPN/sort of N00B question; I am trying Mullvad, and generated a wiregard config file and imported it into firewalla. I assume it is working, since all my local devices IP range has changed from 192.168.49… to 198.54.144…

Do I need to install the app on my local devices as well, to get VPN protection when I am on my home network, or, only need to use the app when leaving my home network?

Also, its a Wiregard config file; if and when I need to have VPN away from home, do I use the wiregard app or the Mullvad app?

thanks for helping, I am kinda embarassed that I am not sure about this!

I’m using Proton VPN via wireguard, and it’s blazing fast

I have recently looked into this, and there is a backward way to get NordVPN working with WireGuard on firewalla. It involves installing Linux and sacrificing your firstborn, or something like that. I didn’t read it all. Here are a couple of links

I like the fact it supports static IP and port forwarding as well. Great for people being CGNAT (ie Starlink and others).

Have you tried the port forwarding feature of this? I have Starlink and need a one that can be used in the FWG and do port forwarding but haven’t really had much luck. I see this has a port mapping feature that takes an outside somewhat random port and forwards it to the port of your choice on a device you have logged in.

Trying out the free option, but can’t seem to get the configuration to be accepted whether I import the.txt file or copy and paste manually.

Assuming you are running Firewalla as your router, and you have selected all devices in the Firewalla Wireguard VPN client settings, then they’ll all be using Mullvad while connected to the LAN. You don’t need any apps installed on your devices.

Away from home you would normally need the Mullvad app to be running, however, if you have Wireguard VPN server set up in Firewalla, you should also be able to see those VPN devices listed separately in the device list of the Firewalla VPN client. They will have a VPN badge.

The up shot is that if they are also selected along with the other devices, you don’t need to use the Mullvad app away from home.

Away from home you connect back to your Firewalla LAN using the Wireguard app, which then connects you through to Mullvad.

Hope that makes sense.

You need to remember that your device connected through Wireguard rather than the LAN has a different ip address than when you’re at home, so you just need to include it in the Firewalla Mullvad settings.

Any tips would be appreciated. Firewalla doesn’t seem to want to accept the Wireguard configuration I downloaded.

Dam. Dude it’s like the 2nd time today you’ve taken the words out of my mouth lol

I don’t use the static IP feature, so I can’t use the permanent port forwarding. However, I’ve used the temporal port forwarding, which keeps the port forwarding rule active for 7 days. For temporary things, that was worked well for me as long as it doesn’t matter what the public port number is (because I can’t choose what it is). Not sure if you have more options with a static IP.

Interesting ; it really is a process that worked the 1st time. Is Free supporting 3rd party VPN?

Its also hard to recommend based on speed alone since it varies and everyone’s perspective is different.

All I can confirm is that I have it working well and stable, no speed issue. Good luck!

thank you for your help; I will set that up that way today!

I would tend to agree.

Sorted my issue by deselecting VPN accelerator and getting 224Mbps on the free servers, which is likely limited by the CPU in my device.

The reduced load and 10Gbps paid tier is sure to be faster

This is what was making my von disconnect constantly. Thank you so much!

Interesting. Thanks for the info. I signed up for a free account with your link. Hope it nets ya something.

No indication that it isn’t. They supply the configuration file for routers after all.

Free just limits you to fewer free servers with limited locations and greater load, therefore slower speed, as well as limiting access to a couple of features like ‘Core’.
