I had my wife install the 1.1.1.1 app on an Iphone 12 pro and it seems she is using an unreasonable amount of data over cellular. 45gigs or so when I’m comparing at 3 or 4 per line without.
I confirmed this on her phone usage locally, and also on my bill.
Does the app handle things differently when the VPN is enabled?
I’ve disabled it since and reset the local data stats but I also wanted to ask here if anyone else has had that experience.
The strangest part is, shes been home the entire time on maternity leave on wifi, where I also have a automatic WAN failover to LTE.
Call me confused.
On iOS, VPNs that arent native (including the Warp VPN) will show all of the cellular data during that time. Wording is bad, so lets say that you turn on Warp and you’re on data, and then you use 25GB on TikTok. TikTok will show 25GB and Warp will show another 25GB. This has been a bug since VPNs are introduced with no fix in sight, seemingly since iOS can’t differentiate between VPN traffic and normal traffic for an app.
However since for you it’s showing up on the phone bill itself - which shouldn’t be happening - and your wife has been on WiFi the whole time, this seems like it could be related to the WiFi assist settings, or if your VPN is unable to connect on WiFi and just likes to sit on data (which I have seen happen where my iPhone, only with VPN on, seemingly cant reconnect to WiFi and just sits on LTE). I believe its the latter, but check WiFi assist and ensure that its off (bottom of Settings > Cellular)
I didn’t even think of WiFi assist. Thanks for the tip.
In this case, it shouldn’t matter if the VPN is enabled or not - the cellular data usage should remain similar.
I have a large data plan so I’m not too concerned, but-I-gotta-know!
